ZTecNet Radio Maintenance

March 3rd, 2009

We are doing some unscheduled maintenance on our two SHOUTcast servers. Due to popular complaint, we are relieving the Pluto server (which runs the ztecnet main website) of our main SHOUTcast server. People were complaining about buffering problems, including myself. More information about this as the work progresses.

UPDATE 3/3 10:57pm: Everything should be back to normal at this time. You may use radio.ztecnet.net in your player to listen now. The SHOUTcast server runs on port 80, and we have a redirect set up for port 8000. So either radio.ztecnet.net or radio.ztecnet.net:8000 may be used. If you experience lag or buffer, please let us know. Thank you!

UPDATE 3/3 10:13pm: We have changed pluto to radio2.ztecnet.net, the low bitrate stream. We have made a new server the primary, radio.ztecnet.net. We are working on setting the main shoutcast server on port 80, with a redirect on port 8000. DNS records have been changed, and should start working momentarily.

New Song “Spin” by ZTecWiz

February 23rd, 2009

UPDATE: I checked back on youtube the following day, and noticed that the HD version is up! Check it out here.

I tried uploading this one to youtube in HD, but I guess that didn’t work out. I used Windows Movie Maker to export the video in HDMI quality, but youtube didn’t like it I guess. The video didn’t even get High Quality. :( Sorry.

This song has a sick amount of bass in it… great beat. Headphones are a MUST. Click here for more, and/or here to download. Enjoy!

Apply for OP in #ZTecNet

February 14th, 2009

If you feel you have the ability to help moderate the official ZTecNet IRC Channel responsibly, you may apply to be halfop/op.

You do not have to choose one or the other, the ZTecNet hiring staff will be making a decision on that.

BEFORE YOU APPLY, YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS, OR YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE PROCESSED:
-You must not have had a NETWORK ban in place in the last 3 months.
-You have had a registered nickname in ZTecNet IRC for at least 6 months.
-You have shown responsibility when communicating with others in #ZTecNet.

To apply:
If you would like to apply, please write a comment to this post including:
A) Your ZTecNet nickname
B) Your hostname (in any form)
C) A brief dialog detailing why we should put forth trust in your moderation abilities. (not too brief)

Attempting to post under another’s nickname is a foolish act, as we will catch you. Your IP address is logged.

Thank you for your interest!

WHERE THE F*** DID MY OP GO!?

February 13th, 2009

Ok. Calm down.

UPDATE:
The problem: Just about everyone had op
The solution: Drop them all, and choose candidates.

On Saturday the 14th, a staff meeting will take place, and we will be choosing at least 5 candidates to be chanop in #ZTecNet.
We judge candidates based on maturity, management skills, etc.

People have been complaining (even ops) that the ratio between ops and non-ops was heavily off-balance. This was found to be very true.

I have decided to start fresh again. I removed everyone’s ops in #ZTecNet. I hope that not everyone is pissed about it. I am reconstructing the moderation system entirely.

A staff meeting is to be held sometime this weekend about who should receive OP status, and discuss whether we shall continue to work with this new idea, or ditch it.

All network staff (ircops) have been moved to OP status from SOP.

There is a bit of good news with this. With this plan, I have removed +Q (no kicks) so that OPs now have priviledge over the rest of the channel.

More to come about this soon.

Please leave comments if you have any thoughts about this new idea.

Sorry guys!

COX Blackout

February 11th, 2009

So, I am still awake (barely) at 3am to write this blog post because an alarm rang on one of the servers in my house telling me, twice, that TWO of my ZTecNet servers, both running on the COX ISP, went offline within 37 minutes of each other. Both servers are in South Windsor, CT, where this blackout took place.

The Moon Server was effected first, at exactly 1:55:43 am. About a half hour later, the Neptune server (along with my internet, cable tv, and telephone service) went out completely at exactly 2:31:53 am. I hopped on the internet with my cell phone to investigate. I glanced at my AIM buddy list to notice that all of my friends had already been signed off.

My internet, along with the Neptune server returned at 2:55 am, with the same IP. Moon has yet to return as of 3am EST.

I happened to have my cell phone on hand so I gave my house a try. I got a recording: “We’re sorry, due to telephone facility trouble your call cannot be completed at this time, will you try your call again later. COX Communications. Beep Beep Beep….”

After my internet came back online I figured that since everyone got disconnected, maybe their routers would be stupid and need to be reset before their internet worked again, so I tried a speedtest. Here’s my result:

SpeedTest.net Result

Not too bad. The most I’ve ever gotten was 30mbps down, 5mbps up. This is a typical nighttime speed, however.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one on the news.

Going to catch some sleep. Have a good one!

UPDATE:
I was awakened yet again at 3:40am by yet another alarm sounding.. This time, it was a good thing. The Moon server has come back online. I just can’t seem to get to sleep. -.-
